ALASKA ADVENTURE 2024: Uh oh

Upon returning to our cabin Tuesday night, we found this letter from the ship's captain giving us some bad news:

Oh no! This definitely put a damper on our trip.

At first, it was a source of anxiety and worry, as we were concerned about the Park, the tourists currently there, and the firefighters - as well as about what could happen to the upcoming land portion of our tour. A lot of our peace and relaxation on the cruise evaporated as we stressed about Denali and searched for news.

Over the next few days we found many conflicting reports online. The fire was 25% contained - no, that had been an initial miscalculation and it was only 5% - the Park would be reopening in time for our land portion on Tuesday - no, the Park would be reopening, but not until Wednesday when we would be leaving. We got a second letter from the captain the next night (July 3) with no new information, and then finally a resolution on July 4 that sounded a little ominous to us:

The lodging and restaurants would be open for us, but that was it. The Park was closed. Our tour into Denali canceled. Needless to say, this was a huge bummer on our trip that you'll hear more about as this blog continues. The whole thing kept us in suspense for quite awhile, and the ultimate outcome was very disappointing, to say the least. Anyway, the first inkling that the Denali portion of our trip was in jeopardy started here on July 2. My thoughts turned to this line from "Airplane!"
