After posting our first vacation entry on Tuesday morning, we returned to St. Louis for some more sightseeing. We couldn't decide if the Mississippi looked higher or lower than last night, so it must have been about the same.

We took the journey to the top of the arch on the 10:35 tram. The creaking and groaning of the tram makes you feel like you're on a ride at the county fair that's about to be shut down. Still, we made it all the way up and back! Here's the proof:

After a quick lunch at Subway (yes, they have $5 footlongs here, too!), we drove to the City Museum which was recommended to us by the Bergdorf Family. Just as we arrived, around 1 p.m., a storm hit and they closed the outside portion. Fortunately, they were able to open it back up around 3 p.m.

It's extremely hard to describe the City Museum. It's like a city went out of business and someone decided to recycle all the best parts into various sculptures and bizarre works of art - that you can crawl around on. It's truly a climbing and sliding extravaganza! There are tunnels and holes and passages everywhere. While we were there, we also attended a free children's circus, the girls went to "Art City", and we went into the Enchanted Caves, another network of slides and tunnels. It was a great time, especially after all the hours in the van yesterday.

We hit the road around 5 p.m. and stopped for supper at a Steak and Shake. That really hit the spot! By the way, we have encountered very friendly people in Missouri - at the Subway, the City Museum, and the Steak and Shake. Somehow they could tell we were tourists because they kept asking where we were from!

Here's a vacation tip - if you are ever out travelling and feel homesick, just stop at a Wal-Mart. I had to pick up a couple of things in Sullivan, Missouri at a Super Wal-mart. Of course, I knew just where to look because it is identical to the one we have in Alliance. Even some of the people looked the same!

We arrived around 7:30 at our stop for the night - a Best Western in Rolla, Missouri. The kids loved the pool, but it was way too cold for Debbie and me so we just put our feet in. That felt good enough!

Tomorrow we plan to visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder House and Museum in Mansfield, Missouri, and then cross into Kansas.

Jon, loose the camera around your neck when you go into the restaurant and you might look more like a native!!! LOL I think the kids would get in the pool if it had ice cubes in it. It's never too cold for them. Looks like you are having a really great vacation. Every morning I look for your new blog so keep them coming. Love to all! Marty

As long as you're in Missouri, you could pay a visit to Marceline, which is where Walt Disney grew up (and drew his inspiration for Main Street, U.S.A.). It's only 5 hours up the road from Mansfield, MO, that's all.
