Our First Day!

Hi, and welcome to this blog about the Truax Family's Wild West Adventure in 2008!

After a year of planning and preparation, we set out on Monday morning, June 23. Although we departed nearly an hour later than scheduled (8:52 a.m. instead of 8 a.m.), we made really good time on the road and arrived at our destination in Collinsville, IL, at 5:15 p.m.

Although it was a long day in the van, the kids did really well. Debbie did a great job of keeping them occupied. We listened to a book on tape ("Bunnicula") that was a lot of fun. She also read trivia and information about each state as we were passing through. We are playing the "license plate game" where we try to spot a plate from each state. We've found about a dozen so far. I told the kids I would buy them a milkshake if we find all 50. (I'll be really surprised if we find Hawaii!) We did see 3 different vehicles from Quebec, and a car from New Hampshire right after Daniel said, "I bet we don't see a car from New Hampshire!"
For lunch we stopped at a McDonald's near Dayton with a large playplace. We also took a break at a beautiful Illinois Welcome Center and enjoyed walking around and stretching our legs.

After supper at the Golden Corral, Monday evening we went to see the Arch. The kids were really impressed with the size of it. Bethany is a little scared to go up in it Tuesday, but Katherine and Daniel are looking forward to it.
The Mississippi River looks really flooded. The water was up to the steps of the Arch, and signs and trees and light posts were underwater. There was a lot of debris in the water and a bad smell. (I think the odor was fertilizer run-off from upstream.) We also enjoyed walking around the Museum of Westward Expansion located under the Arch.

So far, so good!

I can't believe you have time for this! Don't worry too much about updating -- just enjoy. Harry is doing great, by the way. Mandy is enjoying his company a lot, and he's even enjoying hers!

What a great way to keep track of your vacation for 'us' and for 'you'. We loved reading your blog and looking at the pictures. Tell everyone that we send our love. We are into VBS at PC and believe me this year is a real challenge. I'll explain when you return from your vacation. Have fun, stay safe and again give everyone our love!!! Marty

What fun! We're looking forward to hearing all about your trip. Too bad about the flooding. Hope everyone enjoys going up in the arch.
Love, Judy and the gang
P.S. The big question at our house was "What's a log? A plog? A blog? A what?"

What a great idea! It's like we get to go on vacation with you - without the long ride in the van. Wishing you a happy and a safe trip. Janet

Hi to the Truax Family,
The consistory met and decided that this vacation looks so beautiful and that you are missed so much, that several of us are going to drive out and join you. So we've decided to close the church down for a week and meet you out there. Hope this doesn't cost us any members. See you soon. And, thanks for sharing this blog with us.
