At first I was afraid...

Tuesday, July 9, took us deeper into Arizona.  We woke up at the Holiday Inn in Chinle, and had breakfast at Garcia's, the hotel restaurant.

We loaded up and entered the Canyon de Chelly.  (Debbie asked and it is pronounced like "shay.")  There were two drives on the mesa, and we chose the loop that included the White House cliff dwelling and Spider Rock.  There were also Native American vendors peddling their wares at the various sites.

We swung back through Chinle and picked up sub sandwiches for a picnic lunch at our next destination.  After driving for an hour and a half, we reached it:

We had a great time at the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest.  True, it was very hot and that limited the amount of hiking we were able to do, but we still enjoyed seeing all the petrified wood and amazing colors of the desert. Our favorite spots were the Crystal Forest walkway filled with specimens and the Rainbow Forest path where the largest petrified tree is located.

The Painted Desert, where we enjoyed our Subway picnic lunch.

The Agate Bridge, a petrified log bridge.

We left the park in the late afternoon and headed for our destination for the night.
