I've been through the desert...

After leaving the Four Corners Monument, we headed south into Arizona.

We are definitely in the desert now.  There were canyons, mesas, dry waterbeds and vast stretches of empty land.  Every once in a while we would come across a few houses or a little development, but it was few and far between.

"Searching for Service" was Daniel's suggestion for today's blog post title.  He spent most of the day trying to make his cell phone work!

Along the way, it did start to sprinkle on us, and then, lo and behold, we were treated to a desert rainbow!  We had to pull off to get a better look.

When we arrived at Chinle, we were surprised to find animals roaming free on the streets.  There were both livestock and stray dogs.

The kids fell in love with a homeless dog named "Sparkle" and were insistent about bringing her home with us.  I bribed them with swimming at our hotel (Holiday Inn) instead.

We went to a nearby restaurant called "The Junction" to get a taste of some local flavor for supper.  Daniel ordered the chicken fajitas and I had the chicken quesadillas.  We returned to the hotel for some much-needed rest, and I gassed up the van for the next leg of our journey.
